Matthew Glynn - Counsellor
Matthew Glynn is a Registered Social Worker with a background in kinesiology and a particular interest in the psychological aspects of pain, injury, rehabilitation, performance pressure, and return to activity. He holds a Bachelor of Kinesiology and Bachelor of Social Work from Memorial University of Newfoundland, as well as a Master of Social Work from Wilfrid Laurier University.
Matthew works with athletes and active individuals who may be navigating persistent pain, injury-related stress, changes in training or activity, performance pressure, frustration, or uncertainty about returning to sport or other meaningful activities. For younger athletes, injury can affect much more than physical function; it can also disrupt confidence, routines, team involvement, and a sense of identity. Matthew’s work focuses on helping athletes better understand these experiences and develop practical psychological skills for responding to difficult thoughts, emotions, setbacks, and pressure.
His counselling approach is primarily informed by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), along with behavioural principles and cognitive-behavioural strategies. Rather than trying to eliminate difficult thoughts or emotions, Matthew helps clients build awareness, make space for challenging experiences, and stay connected with actions that reflect what matters to them.
Matthew’s interest in this area is shaped in part by his own background in sport and his experiences navigating injury and pain. He played several team sports growing up, primarily hockey, before becoming involved in martial arts as a teenager and kickboxing as a young adult. Today, he stays active through resistance training, running, and bouldering.
